Paper Hat
No scissors · No glue · No adult help needed
- A sheet of newspaper (or large construction paper), 305 x 457 mm (12 x 18 in)
Blue dashes: valley fold (toward you). Pink dash-dot: mountain fold (away from you). Thick line with scissors: cut. Yellow: glue.
-
Start. Lay the paper down tall, with the short edges at the top and bottom and the white side facing up.
-
1. Valley fold: Fold the top edge down to the bottom edge. Press the fold flat.
-
2. Fold and unfold: Fold the paper in half from side to side, then open it again. Now there is a crease down the middle.
-
3. Valley fold: Fold the top left corner down so its top edge lies along the middle crease.
-
4. Valley fold: Fold the top right corner down the same way. The two corners meet in the middle.
-
5. Valley fold: Fold the bottom edge of the top layer up to the bottom of the corners.
-
6. Valley fold: Fold the strip up again over the corners. This makes the brim.
-
7. Turn over: Turn the paper over from left to right.
-
8. Valley fold: Fold the bottom edge up to the bottom of the corners.
-
9. Valley fold: Fold the strip up again to make the second brim.
-
10. Open: Slide your hands inside the bottom and gently pull the sides apart to open the hat. Put it on!
If something goes wrong
- The two corners do not meet in the middle. Unfold them. Line each top edge up with the middle crease before you press the fold.
- The hat is too small. Use a bigger sheet: a newspaper page or 12 x 18 in paper fits most children. A printer sheet only fits a toy.
- The brim keeps opening. Press both brim folds hard with your fingernail. The brim holds the corners in place, so make it snug.
