Where Does Rain Come From?

True facts · 3 questions

Picture: A lake between green hills on a warm summer day. On the near shore, a boy of eight with light skin and curly red hair, in a striped shirt and jeans, kneels by a puddle with his little sister, who has light skin and blonde pigtails and a yellow raincoat. The sun shines over the lake, and puffy clouds, one of them gray, gather over the far hills.

1 Rain starts with the sun. The sun warms the water in oceans, lakes and even puddles. As the water gets warm, some of it turns into a gas called water vapor. You cannot see water vapor, but it floats up into the sky.

2 High in the sky, the air is cold. The cold air turns the water vapor back into tiny drops of water. Together, these drops make a cloud. Inside the cloud, the drops bump into each other. They join and grow bigger and heavier. When the drops get too heavy to float, they fall to the ground as rain. Then the whole trip starts again.
