Color, Value and Composition
Learners study the three tools artists use to steer a viewer's eye. They build value scales and model light on a form (highlight, midtone, reflected light, core shadow and cast shadow), describe colors precisely by hue, value and saturation, use color-wheel relationships, tints, shades and tones, and plan compositions with a focal point, the rule of thirds, balance and leading lines. They finish by analyzing how a painting directs attention.
