What 1st graders learn

First grade is a big reading year: children move from sounding out single words to reading short books, with blends, digraphs such as sh and th, and silent e. In math they add and subtract within 20, think of numbers as tens and ones, measure lengths and tell time to the half hour. Science covers light, sound and the patterns of the sun and moon, and it is a good age to find the home row on a keyboard and to guide a robot with simple code blocks.
