Networks, Protocols and Reliability
Networks lose, damage and delay data all the time, yet messages still arrive intact. Learners analyze redundant paths and single points of failure, trace how acknowledgments, timeouts and retransmission repair packet loss, detect errors with a parity bit and a toy checksum, and calculate transfer times from latency, throughput, bottlenecks and header overhead.

- Reliability and performance check: 10 questions
- Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, trace code, match pairs, type a number and put in order
What learners will discover
- Analyze a network for fault tolerance: count routes between two points, identify single points of failure, and weigh the cost of redundancy.
- Explain and trace how sequence numbers, acknowledgments, timeouts and retransmission give reliable delivery over links that lose packets.
- Detect transmission errors with a parity bit and a toy checksum, and explain what each can and cannot detect.
- Calculate transfer time from latency and throughput (including bottlenecks), and reason about scaling and the overhead of layered headers.
