Geometric Reasoning and Definitions

The opening course of geometry builds the language and logic of proof. Learners work with undefined terms and precise definitions, analyze conditional statements and their converses, inverses and contrapositives, contrast inductive conjectures with deductive arguments, apply the segment and angle addition postulates, and write their first two-column and paragraph proofs, including the vertical angles theorem.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 120 minutes
  • Reasoning and definitions check: 11 questions
  • Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, match pairs, type a number, put in order and sort into groups

What learners will discover

  • Use precise definitions of basic geometric terms and judge whether a definition is precise enough, using counterexamples and biconditional form.
  • Analyze conditional statements: identify hypothesis and conclusion, write the converse, inverse and contrapositive, decide their truth, and give counterexamples.
  • Distinguish inductive from deductive reasoning and apply postulates (segment addition, angle addition, linear pairs) to find lengths and angle measures.
  • Write two-column and paragraph proofs with a justified reason for every statement, including the vertical angles theorem.
