Geometric Modeling and Constraints

Learners use geometry to model and design real objects: they represent irregular objects with simple shapes and state their assumptions, explore designs numerically to find the best option under a constraint (the largest pen, the biggest open box), check whether designs satisfy limits on slope, clearance and capacity, and reason about measurement precision before communicating a recommendation.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 125 minutes
  • Geometric modeling check: 11 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, type a number, place on a number line, put in order, sort into groups and write a short answer

What learners will discover

  • Model real objects with geometric shapes, state the assumptions, and estimate lengths, areas and volumes.
  • Explore designs with tables and formulas to find the best option under a constraint (maximum area or volume).
  • Decide whether a design satisfies physical constraints (slope limits, clearances, capacities) using geometry and trigonometry.
  • Reason about measurement precision and error bounds in geometric models and communicate design decisions with their limitations.
