Periodic Patterns and Explanations

Learners read the periodic table as a model: position tells the number of shells and valence electrons. They explain trends in atomic radius, ionization energy and electronegativity with one idea (the attraction between the nucleus and outer electrons), test those explanations against real data, and use them to predict the behaviour of elements they have never studied.

What learners will discover

  • Describe how the periodic table is organised and relate an element's group and period to its valence electrons and occupied shells.
  • Explain trends in atomic radius, ionization energy and electronegativity using nuclear charge, shielding and distance from the nucleus.
  • Identify periodic trends and exceptions in tables and graphs of data.
  • Predict the properties and relative reactivity of unfamiliar elements from their position, and represent displacement reactions with balanced equations.
