Accessible Product Design and User Testing
This advanced course follows the Cedar Valley Library's design team as it tests and repairs its new study-room booking page. Learners compute usability metrics (task success rate, time on task, error rate and post-task ease ratings), plan an ethical, inclusive test with disabled participants, informed consent and non-leading tasks, audit accessibility through the keyboard path, accessible names, contrast ratios, captions and reflow, and then prioritize findings by severity and frequency before retesting.

What learners will discover
- Compute and interpret usability metrics: task success rate, time on task (using the median), error rate and a post-task ease rating, with appropriate caution about small samples.
- Plan an ethical, inclusive usability test: recruit diverse participants including disabled users, obtain informed consent, and write realistic, non-leading tasks.
- Audit a product's accessibility by checking the keyboard path, accessible names for screen readers, contrast ratios, captions and transcripts, and reflow at high zoom.
- Prioritize findings by severity and frequency, treat blockers as top priority, and iterate by fixing and retesting against the same metrics.
