Map Projections and Measurement Error
Measurements taken from maps are only as good as the projection, coordinate system and data behind them. Learners classify projections by developable surface and tangency, correct map measurements with scale factors (including UTM's 0.9996), work out UTM zones and recognise datum shifts, then distinguish precision from accuracy, identify sources of GNSS error and propagate measurement error into derived lengths and areas.

- Projections and measurement error check: 10 questions
- Ways to answer: choose an answer, estimate, highlight a text, pin a map, pick map regions and match pairs
What learners will discover
- Explain developable surfaces (cylinder, cone, plane), tangent and secant cases, and match projection families to the shape and location of a region.
- Correct map measurements using scale factors, including Mercator's 1/cos(latitude) and UTM's central-meridian factor of 0.9996.
- Determine UTM zones from longitude and explain how datums affect coordinates.
- Distinguish precision from accuracy, identify sources of positional error and propagate measurement error into derived quantities.
