Forces and Newtonian Models

Learners identify the forces on an object and draw free-body diagrams, then use Newton's first and second laws to predict motion for single objects, connected objects and people in lifts. They model friction with static and kinetic coefficients, resolve weight on inclines, and finish by separating Newton's third-law pairs from balanced forces on one object.

What learners will discover

  • Identify the forces acting on a chosen object (weight, normal force, tension, friction, applied force, drag), draw a free-body diagram and find the net force, including perpendicular components.
  • Apply Newton's first and second laws (ΣF = ma) to single objects and connected systems, including equilibrium and apparent weight in an accelerating lift.
  • Model friction with static and kinetic coefficients and analyse objects on inclines by resolving the weight into components along and perpendicular to the slope.
  • Identify Newton's third-law force pairs and distinguish them from balanced forces acting on a single object.
