Advanced Reading and Independent Inquiry
Learners open their senior year by reading challenging older prose from Francis Bacon's “Of Studies” (1625) and Ralph Waldo Emerson's “Self-Reliance” (1841). They paraphrase archaic syntax and vocabulary accurately, annotate an argument's moves (claim, concession, example, definition and qualification), generate factual, interpretive, evaluative and open inquiry questions, and keep an inquiry log that synthesizes ideas across texts.
