Language, Style and Deliberate Revision
Learners study style as a set of deliberate choices. They analyze cumulative, periodic and balanced sentences and the rhythm they create; examine modernist techniques such as free indirect discourse and stream of consciousness in short excerpts from Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway (1925) and James Joyce's “Araby” (1914); revise for emphasis, concision and cohesion using known-new order and verbs in place of nominalizations; and imitate a style while explaining their choices.
