Evaluate and Prepare Geographic Data
Most of a geographer's time goes into getting data ready. Learners judge datasets against quality dimensions and metadata, clean records and join tables with stable keys (and find out why joins fail), turn counts into rates, densities and percentages, and classify data for maps with equal intervals, quantiles and natural breaks — seeing how each choice changes the story a map tells.
- 4 lessons
- About 125 minutes
- Data preparation check: 11 questions
- Ways to answer: choose an answer, highlight a text, pin a map, pick map regions, match pairs and type a number
What learners will discover
- Evaluate a dataset's fitness for use using quality dimensions (completeness, consistency, positional, thematic and temporal accuracy) and its metadata.
- Clean geographic data and join tables using stable keys, diagnosing why records fail to match.
- Normalise counts into rates, densities and percentages that suit the research question.
- Classify data for mapping using equal interval, quantile and natural breaks methods, and explain how classification changes a map's message.
