Science · Grade 12
Pollution, Measurement and Solutions
Learners classify air and water pollutants by source and chemistry, balance the reactions behind acid deposition, and measure pollution quantitatively in percent, ppm, ppb and mg/L against guideline values. They trace eutrophication from nutrient runoff to oxygen-starved water, interpret dissolved-oxygen data, and read dose–response curves, LD50 values, reference doses and biomagnification with attention to the limits of toxicity data. The course ends by comparing prevention, treatment and remediation by cost-effectiveness.

- Pollution and measurement check: 11 questions
- Ways to answer: balance equations, choose an answer, estimate, highlight a text, match pairs and type a number
What learners will discover
- Classify air and water pollutants as primary or secondary and as point or nonpoint, and explain the chemistry of acid deposition and ground-level ozone.
- Express and convert concentrations in percent, ppm, ppb, mg/L and µg/L, calculate pollutant loads, and compare measurements with guideline values.
- Explain eutrophication as a causal chain and interpret dissolved-oxygen data, including the effect of temperature on oxygen solubility and daily cycles.
- Interpret dose–response curves, LD50, NOAEL and reference doses, explain bioaccumulation and biomagnification, and state the limits of toxicity data.
- Compare pollution prevention, treatment and remediation using the prevention hierarchy and cost-effectiveness.
