Introduction to AI and Data Limitations

Learners meet artificial intelligence as programs that learn patterns from many examples rather than thinking like people. They follow how a pretend fruit sorter is trained and tested, use a sampling simulation to see why small or unrepresentative data gives poor results, and practise responsible use: checking AI answers, keeping private information out, keeping humans in charge, and saying when AI helped.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 85 minutes
  • AI and data check: 8 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, highlight a text, type a number, put in order, sort into groups and write a short answer

What learners will discover

  • Explain that AI systems are programs that learn patterns from many examples (training data) to make predictions or generate content, and that they do not think, feel or understand like people.
  • Explain how the amount and variety of training data affect results, and how small or unrepresentative data leads to wrong or unfair results (bias).
  • Use AI responsibly: check its answers with reliable sources, never share private information, keep people in charge of decisions, and say when AI helped.
