Privacy, Security and Digital Identity

After a fictional app breach leads to a stolen account, learners rebuild one student's digital security from the ground up: passphrases and password managers backed by simple counting, multi-factor methods and their tradeoffs, and account recovery as the hidden weak point. They then look outward at how tracking and data brokers build profiles, practise data minimization and privacy settings, and audit and shape a digital identity with deliberate sharing choices.

What learners will discover

  • Explain authentication factors and use counting of possibilities to compare passwords and passphrases, and justify unique passwords kept in a password manager.
  • Evaluate multi-factor authentication methods by their protections and weak points, and identify account recovery as a route that can bypass them.
  • Describe in general terms how cookies, device identifiers, fingerprinting and data brokers track people, and apply privacy settings and data minimization.
  • Audit and manage a digital identity: choose audiences and sharing permissions deliberately and respond to reputation problems realistically.
