Algebra Readiness and Quantitative Reasoning
A fast but serious consolidation of the number sense algebra depends on: computing with signed rational numbers and proving why the sign rules work, reasoning with ratios and unit rates, handling percent change (including why successive changes do not simply add), and checking whether a quantitative result or claim is reasonable.
- 4 lessons
- About 110 minutes
- Quantitative reasoning check: 10 questions
- Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, estimate, type a fraction, highlight a text and type a number
What learners will discover
- Compute with signed rational numbers, apply the order of operations correctly (including exponents and negatives), and justify why a negative times a negative is positive.
- Reason with ratios, unit rates and proportional relationships, including comparing rates and scaling quantities multiplicatively.
- Calculate percents and percent change with multipliers, reverse a percent change, and explain why successive percent changes are not additive.
- Estimate results and judge the reasonableness of quantitative answers and claims using benchmarks, units and orders of magnitude.
