Refine Grammar and Register

Learners sharpen the grammar that makes intermediate Spanish precise: the preterite–imperfect contrast in narration, ser and estar with changes of meaning, por and para, direct and indirect object pronouns (including se lo), and the move from informal to formal register with courtesy forms and the present subjunctive after common expressions (Es importante que…, Le recomiendo que…). Each point is practised in context, from childhood memories to a formal email to an exchange program.

What learners will discover

  • Choose between the preterite and the imperfect in narration: completed events versus background, habits and ongoing actions (mientras leía, sonó el teléfono).
  • Use ser and estar with adjectives that change meaning (es listo / está listo), and por and para in their common uses.
  • Replace nouns with direct and indirect object pronouns, combine them (se lo, me la) and place them correctly with conjugated verbs, infinitives and commands.
  • Adjust register from informal to formal, using usted, precise vocabulary, courtesy forms and the present subjunctive after common expressions of necessity, advice and wishes.
