What it is
Architects draw rooms square by square on a blueprint grid. Some blueprints ask for an area, some for a perimeter, and the hardest ask for both, for two rooms with the same area but different walls, or for the biggest room a length of wall can hold. Any rectilinear room that meets the goals is accepted — there is never just one right drawing.
What children learn
Area as counting unit squares and perimeter as the length of the boundary, telling the two apart, rooms with the same area and different perimeters (and the reverse), smallest perimeter for an area and largest area for a perimeter.
What it teaches
- Area and perimeter
- Design shapes to area and perimeter goals
How to play
Tap a square to add or remove it, or drag across squares to paint a room. Keyboard: arrow keys move the cursor, Space adds or removes a square, Enter checks. Two-room blueprints have a Room A and Room B tab.
