What it is

Explore a big, beautiful forest valley in 3D, where woodland meets grassy meadows, a river, ponds and a swampy clearing. Crouch through tall grass, read simple fictional tracks, keep the breeze in your face, watch the eye and sound meters, and use a bow with a guided arc to bring down the fictional fernstripe antelope your mission asks for. Outcomes are non-graphic: a hit is a quick, gentle fade with a marker, there is no injury or remains, and the bow is put away once the mission count is reached. Rosette prowlers patrol some trails; if one notices you, walk to a glowing safe ring, and if it finds you, you restart at your last safe ring. 24 hand-designed missions in three chapters, starting with a guided tutorial. This is fictional entertainment, not real hunting instruction. It needs a parent, teacher or school to switch it on. A separate game, Forest Trails Photos, offers the same forest with a camera instead of a bow.

What children learn

PlayTime is played for fun. Forest Trails practises planning a route, moving patiently and judging an arc, but it is never counted as learning evidence and it teaches no real-world hunting.

What it teaches

  • Hand–eye coordination

How to play

W A S D or arrow keys walk, Shift hurries, C crouches, Q and E or a mouse drag turn the view, F or the right mouse button raises the bow, Space or a click releases, G tosses a pebble, L or Enter looks closer, M shows the map, P or Escape pauses. Touch screens get a walking stick and big Bow, Release, Crouch, Look and Pebble buttons. A flat map view works without 3D graphics.
