Number-Line Hop

What it is

A frog hops along a number line. Children place numbers, count on and back, round, and locate fractions, decimals and negative numbers. On open lines they build their own hops of tens and ones to add and subtract within 100, and older learners trap square roots and π between whole numbers, tenths and hundredths. Every answer is a real position on the line, checked exactly.

What children learn

Develops number sense as position and distance: counting, addition and subtraction as movement, place value and rounding, adding and subtracting within 100 with tens-and-ones hops, fractions and decimals as points between whole numbers, integers and rational operations, and rational approximations of irrational numbers.
