Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions in full sentences.
- Tariq had a red hat with a flat top. He wore it to the park with his big sister, Amal.
- Then the wind began to blow. It blew so hard that the hat flew off Tariq's head! It landed high in a tree, on a thin twig.
- Tariq could not reach it. Amal could not reach it. Then a man with a long rake came by.
- "Can I help?" he asked. He gave the twig a gentle tap, and the hat dropped into Tariq's hands.
- "Thank you!" said Tariq with a big grin. On the way home, he held his hat with both hands.
- 1. Where did Tariq's hat land?
- 2. Why did Tariq hold his hat with both hands on the way home?
- 3. What does the word 'reach' mean in the story?
- 4. Draw a picture of the most important part and write one sentence about it.

How to use it
Read the passage once just for the story or the facts, then again with the questions in mind. Encourage underlining the words in the text that back up each answer. It is one of the easier sheets for Grade 1, good as a warm-up or a first look at the skill.
An answer key comes with it as a separate page that grown-ups download after signing in.
Tip for grown-ups: Ask your child to point to the sentence that answers each question before writing it.
Done on paper? A grown-up can record it on the child's page in PlayOwl; downloading alone doesn't count as finished.
