What this book practices

A shortened adaptation, in new words, of the opening of Johanna Spyri's Heidi (1881): the climb to the Alm, the gruff grandfather who slowly thaws, Peter and the goats, and the first evening and day on the mountain. Rich in setting, and in feelings shown through small actions.

Credit and rights

Adaptation
Follows the events of the opening chapters of Heidi by Johanna Spyri, a Swiss novel written in German: the climb to the Alm, the first evening in the grandfather's hut and the first day on the pasture with Peter and the goats. Retold in new English sentences, checked against two public-domain English translations (named in the text record) and reworded so that no sentence follows either. No abridgement, film or illustrated edition was copied. The family's sad history, the harsher village gossip, the grandfather's pipe and the religious passages are left out, and Peter does not strike the goat. Public domain. The work was first published in the early 1880s, so in the United States its copyright has expired (works published before 1929). In countries where copyright lasts for the author's life plus 70 years, the term ended on 31 December 1971, because Johanna Spyri died in 1901. The English wording is PlayOwl's own, so no translator's rights are involved. PlayOwl claims no rights in the underlying story.

Text
Written for PlayOwl in 2026 as a new, shortened adaptation of the opening chapters of Heidi (the climb to the Alm, the first evening in the hut and the first day on the pasture). Every sentence is new PlayOwl wording. The retelling was checked against two public-domain English translations of Heidi (the anonymous older translation, Project Gutenberg 1448, and Elisabeth Stork's translation of 1915, Project Gutenberg 20781) and reworded so that no sentence follows either of them. No phrase of either translation is kept; only the events and the names come from the story. Original wording owned by PlayOwl. The underlying story is in the public domain (see the adaptation record).
