What children learn in art
Art builds hand control, vocabulary and confidence, and there is never one right answer. Young children scribble, color inside shapes and name and mix colors; early elementary children plan pictures, use primary and secondary colors and tell stories through drawings. In Grades 3–5 they meet line, shape, texture, pattern and balance, draw from observation and try comics, pixel art and animation. Middle school adds perspective, shading, color theory and digital tools.
