Distinguish MSA and Selected Labeled Varieties

Arabic speakers live with two layers of language: Modern Standard Arabic (الْفُصْحَى) for reading, writing and formal speech, and many spoken varieties (often called اللَّهَجَاتُ) for everyday life. Learners explore where each is used, meet a small, clearly labelled set of everyday words and sounds from four varieties (Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf and Moroccan), connect them to the MSA they know, and choose the right register for a situation, with respect for every variety.

What learners will discover

  • Explain where Modern Standard Arabic is usually used (news, books, formal speeches, school) and where spoken varieties are usually used (home, friends, markets, much entertainment), and that speakers move between them.
  • Recognise a small set of common everyday words in four labelled varieties (Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Moroccan) and match them to their MSA equivalents.
  • Notice common sound and spelling differences: ق pronounced as a glottal stop or as g, ج as g in Cairo, ث as t in many cities, and spoken varieties written without fixed rules or vowel marks.
  • Choose an appropriate register for a situation and explain the choice respectfully, without treating any variety as 'wrong Arabic'.
