Joining Rules and Short Vowels

Learners crack the code of written Arabic. They learn which six letters never join the letter after them, read the three short vowels and sukun to blend syllables, tell short vowels from long ones, hear the doubling sign shadda, and read the tanwin endings on nouns. By the end they can sound out fully vocalized words.

What learners will discover

  • Join letters correctly, knowing that ا د ذ ر ز و never join the following letter, that لا is the joined form of ل + ا, and count the separate pieces of a word.
  • Read the short vowels fatha, kasra and damma and the sukun, and blend them into syllables and short words such as دَرَسَ and قَلْبٌ.
  • Tell short vowels from long vowels (ا و ي) and read shadda as a doubled consonant (دَرَسَ / دَرَّسَ).
  • Recognise the tanwin endings ـٌ ـٍ ـً (-un, -in, -an) and the tied t ة at the end of nouns, and read whole vocalized words.
