Simple Sentences and Agreement

Learners describe homes and everyday things in complete Arabic sentences. They build sentences that need no word for 'is', decide whether a noun is masculine or feminine, see how الْ turns 'a big house' into 'the big house' or 'the house is big', and add the endings for my, your, his and her. The course ends with a written description of a room.

What learners will discover

  • Build and understand sentences with no verb 'to be': a definite subject and an indefinite description (الْبَيْتُ كَبِيرٌ, the house is big).
  • Decide whether a thing is masculine or feminine (most nouns ending in ة are feminine) and use هٰذَا / هٰذِهِ and هُوَ / هِيَ for things.
  • Make adjectives agree with their noun in gender and in definiteness, and tell a phrase (الْبَيْتُ الْكَبِيرُ, the big house) from a sentence (الْبَيْتُ كَبِيرٌ, the house is big).
  • Use the possessive endings ـِي، ـكَ، ـكِ، ـهُ، ـهَا (my, your, his, her), changing ة to ت before them, to talk about whose things are whose.
