A Small Reviewed Modeling Project

Learners carry out a complete, small modeling project on a fictional library dataset: they frame the problem and fix a success criterion, check the data for leakage, minimization and quality problems, make a time-based split, compute baselines, build and choose between a threshold model and a small decision tree on validation data, evaluate the chosen model once on the test set, analyze errors by subgroup, and write a model card that a teacher reviews against a rubric.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 120 minutes
  • Project review: 10 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, trace code, highlight a text, type a number, put in order and sort into groups

What learners will discover

  • Frame a modeling project and check a dataset for leakage, unnecessary personal data and data-quality problems.
  • Set up a time-based split and compute baselines, including the 'flag no one' and 'flag everyone' extremes and the current staff rule.
  • Build simple candidate models (a threshold and a small tree) and choose among them on validation data against a success criterion fixed in advance.
  • Evaluate the chosen model once on the test set, analyze its errors by subgroup, and document it in a model card with honest limitations.
