Systems, Assets and Threat Models

Defensive security starts with understanding what you are protecting. Learners inventory the assets of a fictional public library, describe harm with confidentiality, integrity and availability, separate threats from vulnerabilities and controls, rate risks with a likelihood-times-impact matrix, and build a first threat model for a fictional food pantry's volunteer sign-up website.

What learners will discover

  • Identify the assets of a system (data, devices, services, trust) and describe harm to each as a loss of confidentiality, integrity or availability.
  • Distinguish threats, vulnerabilities and controls, and recognize accidental, environmental, technical, outsider and insider threat sources.
  • Estimate and rank risks with a likelihood-times-impact matrix, and explain whether a control lowers likelihood, impact or both.
  • Build a simple threat model for a fictional system: data flows, trust boundaries, what could go wrong, and a matching control for each concern.
