Coordinates, Vectors and Transformations

Using a fictional boating game, learners convert between world coordinates and screen pixels, move objects with vector addition, scaling, length and normalization, transform shapes by translation, scaling and rotation about a pivot, and apply vectors to gameplay: range checks with squared distances, aiming and fixing the diagonal-speed bug.

What learners will discover

  • Use world and screen coordinates, including converting with a camera, a zoom and a flipped y axis.
  • Add, subtract, scale and normalize vectors, and compute their length, to move objects.
  • Apply translations, scaling and rotations, including rotation about a pivot, and explain why order matters.
  • Use vectors for gameplay: range checks, aiming and constant-speed movement in any direction.
