Association and Regression
Learners study relationships between two quantitative variables. They describe scatterplots, interpret the correlation r and its properties, build the least-squares regression line from summary statistics, interpret slope, intercept and r² in context, use residuals and residual plots to judge fit, recognize outliers and influential points, avoid extrapolation, and separate correlation from causation. An optional honors lesson straightens curved data with logarithms.

What learners will discover
- Describe scatterplots by direction, form, strength and unusual features, and interpret the correlation r.
- Find and interpret the least-squares regression line, using slope = r × (SD of y ÷ SD of x) and the point (x̄, ȳ).
- Assess a linear model with residuals, residual plots and r², and recognize outliers, influential points and extrapolation.
- Distinguish correlation from causation and identify plausible lurking variables.
