Data, Correlation and Model Critique

Learners summarize distributions with center, spread, shape and outliers, look for associations in two-way tables using conditional relative frequencies, and describe scatterplots with direction, form, strength and correlation. They fit and interpret linear models, judge fit with residuals, and critique claims that confuse correlation with causation, ignore lurking variables, extrapolate, or use misleading graphs.

What learners will discover

  • Summarize and compare distributions using center (mean, median), spread (range, interquartile range), shape and outliers, and choose an appropriate measure of center.
  • Use two-way tables and conditional relative frequencies to describe possible associations between categorical variables.
  • Describe scatterplots, interpret correlation qualitatively, interpret a fitted linear model in context, and use residuals to judge whether a line fits.
  • Critique statistical claims: distinguish correlation from causation, identify lurking variables, and recognize misleading graphs and unjustified extrapolation.
