Sampling Distributions

Learners treat a sample statistic as a random variable. Starting from a sampling simulation, they describe sampling variability, find the mean and standard deviation of the sampling distributions of a sample proportion and a sample mean, check when a normal model is appropriate, meet the Central Limit Theorem, and distinguish bias from variability in estimators.

  • Sampling distributions check: 10 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, match pairs, type a number, sort into groups, true or false and write a short answer

What learners will discover

  • Explain sampling variability and interpret a sampling distribution of a statistic.
  • Describe the sampling distribution of a sample proportion: center, spread and conditions for a normal model.
  • Describe the sampling distribution of a sample mean, including the Central Limit Theorem.
  • Distinguish bias from variability of an estimator and explain the effect of sample size.
