Pattern, Perspective and Spatial Design

Learners build repeat patterns from a motif using slides, flips and turns, and identify regular, alternating, progressive and flowing rhythm. They create the illusion of depth with overlap, size, placement, detail and atmospheric perspective, then construct one-point and two-point linear perspective with a horizon line and vanishing points. Finally they plan a space, from a scaled floor plan to a perspective view with foreground, middle ground and background.

What learners will discover

  • Build patterns from a motif using translation, reflection and rotation, and identify regular, alternating, progressive and flowing rhythm.
  • Create the illusion of depth with overlap, relative size, vertical placement, detail and atmospheric perspective.
  • Construct one-point and two-point perspective using a horizon line at eye level, vanishing points and converging edges.
  • Plan a spatial design using a scaled floor plan, a chosen viewpoint and foreground, middle ground and background.
