Sustain and Repair an Interpersonal Exchange

At a youth forum in Lausanne (a fictional event), participants from Lyon, Dakar, Abidjan, Liège and Québec plan workshops together. Following their exchanges, learners repair breakdowns (correcting themselves, reformulating, clearing up a partner's misunderstanding), resolve misunderstandings rooted in regional French and cultural expectations (dîner at noon, c'est correct, huitante, natel, essencerie, maquis; tu or vous; la bise) with curiosity rather than judgment, sustain a conversation by elaborating and linking to their partner's turn, and handle a simulated conversation and a formal email in a consistent register. Everything is tapped, chosen or typed; speaking practice is optional.

What learners will discover

  • Resolve misunderstandings caused by regional vocabulary and cultural expectations across the francophone world (déjeuner, dîner, souper; c'est correct; bienvenue; septante, huitante, nonante; natel; essencerie; maquis; tu or vous; la bise), reacting with curiosity rather than correction.
  • Sustain an exchange by elaborating (reasons, examples, comparisons, consequences), linking explicitly to the partner's previous turn and relaunching with follow-up questions.
  • Handle a simulated conversation and a formal email exchange, responding to every point in a consistent register and adapting when a partner proposes a change (On peut se tutoyer ?).
