Compare Narratives and Viewpoints

One snowy afternoon in Québec City, told twice: by Océane, a student stuck on a school bus, in her blog, and by a local news brief. Learners identify who is telling each story and from which point of view, separate shared facts from details and interpretations, report what people said in indirect speech with the right tense shifts, and write a structured comparison of the two viewpoints.

What learners will discover

  • Identify the narrator and the point of view (point de vue interne, externe or omniscient; involved or distant) and explain how it shapes what the reader can learn.
  • Compare two accounts of the same event: shared facts, details only one includes, facts versus interpretations, and differences in tone and purpose.
  • Report what others said or asked in indirect speech with reporting verbs and the main shifts (présent → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait, futur → conditionnel; est-ce que → si; demain → le lendemain).
  • Write a structured comparison of two viewpoints using alors que, tandis que, contrairement à, de même and les deux récits.
