Interpret Longer Connected Texts

Learners read longer, connected French texts with a strategy instead of word-by-word translation. Using an original feature article on shared city gardens in Montréal, Paris and Dakar, a column on school start times and an opinion piece on rental e-scooters, they map paragraph structure through connecteurs logiques, follow reference words (celui-ci, ces dernières, y, en), separate main ideas from examples, read the writer's attitude (including the journalistic conditional), work out words through word formation, and write a structured résumé with a personal response.

What learners will discover

  • Track the organization of a longer text through paragraph topics, discourse markers (d'abord, en outre, cependant, en revanche, c'est pourquoi, en somme) and reference words (celui-ci, ces dernières, les, y, en).
  • Distinguish main ideas from supporting details and examples, and condense each paragraph into one sentence in your own words.
  • Infer the writer's attitude and purpose from word choice (prétendre, envahir, certes… mais, the journalistic conditional), and work out unfamiliar words from word formation (-ment, -tion, -teur, -ité; re-/ré-, dé-/dés-, in-/im-, mé-).
  • Write a structured résumé of a longer text (third person, present tense, own words) followed by a reasoned personal response.
