Revise Extended Writing

Mathis has written a first draft for his school blog about an exchange trip to Liège. Learners revise it in three passes, from big to small: content and organization (a clear main idea, topic sentences, one idea per paragraph, relevant support), cohesion (connectors, reference chains, and combining sentences with qui, que, où, dont, lequel, ce qui and ce que), and accuracy with a personal checklist (agreement, auxiliaries, tenses, moods, negation, accents and the classic homophones a/à, et/est, son/sont, ces/ses/c'est/s'est, ou/où, on/ont). They then give specific, kind feedback and keep a revision log for their own text.

What learners will discover

  • Revise for content and organization: a clear main idea, a topic sentence for each paragraph, one idea per paragraph, a logical order and only relevant support.
  • Improve cohesion with connectors, reference chains (pronouns, demonstratives, synonyms) and by combining short sentences with qui, que, où, dont, lequel/laquelle and ce qui / ce que.
  • Edit for accuracy with a personal checklist: agreement, auxiliaries, passé composé/imparfait, subjunctive triggers, full negation, accents and the homophones a/à, et/est, son/sont, ces/ses/c'est/s'est, ou/où, on/ont.
  • Give specific, kind and actionable feedback on a draft, and use feedback to revise, explaining each change in a revision log (journal de révision).
