Gender and Agreement in Context

Every French noun is masculine or feminine, and the words around it follow. Learners name school and home objects with le, la, l', les and un, une, des, use word endings as hints, hear when something is plural even though the -s is silent, make adjectives agree and put them in the right place, and finally describe a classroom with il y a and say where people live (à Dakar, en France, au Canada, aux États-Unis).

What learners will discover

  • Use le, la, l', les and un, une, des with school and home nouns, learning each noun with its article and using endings only as hints (-tion and -té usually feminine; -ment and -eau usually masculine).
  • Form plurals (-s, -x, -al → -aux) and hear number even though the plural -s is silent: le/les, un/des and liaison (les‿affaires) carry it.
  • Make adjectives agree in gender and number, noticing heard changes (petit/petite, blanc/blanche, beau/belle, gentil/gentille) and silent ones (bleu/bleue), keep marron and orange unchanged, and place adjectives after the noun, or before it for beau, joli, bon, jeune, vieux, nouveau, petit, grand.
  • Describe a room or classroom with il y a, and say where people live with à + city, en + feminine country, au + masculine country and aux + plural country (à Dakar, en France, au Sénégal, aux États-Unis; en Haïti, à Madagascar).
