Read and Respond to Short Texts

Learners become confident readers of everyday French. They use cognates, word families and suffixes to understand new words while avoiding false friends (la librairie is a bookshop!), scan practical texts — a school timetable with 24-hour times, a canteen menu, a school-fair poster, a weather report and market prices in euros and francs CFA — follow the main idea, details and order of events in a short story from Martinique, and finally answer a pen pal's message from Kinshasa in French.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 105 minutes
  • Reading and responding check: 9 questions
  • Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, choose a reply, highlight a text, match pairs and type a number

What learners will discover

  • Use cognates, word families and suffix patterns (-tion, -té = -ty, -ment = -ly, -eux = -ous) to understand new words, and recognise false friends (la librairie, la bibliothèque, le collège, attendre, rester, sensible).
  • Scan practical texts (a timetable with 24-hour times, a canteen menu, a poster, a weather report, prices in euros and francs CFA) for specific information, including days and dates written in lowercase (le lundi 3 mars).
  • Identify the main idea, key details and the order of events in a short narrative.
  • Respond to a text by answering questions about it in French and writing a short reply to a message.
