Shapes, Halves and Fourths
What makes a triangle a triangle? Learners separate defining attributes (three straight sides, closed) from attributes that do not matter (colour, size, direction), build new shapes from flat and solid shapes, and split circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares called halves and fourths, discovering that more equal shares means smaller shares.

What learners will discover
- Tell defining attributes of a shape (number of straight sides, closed) from attributes that do not define it (colour, size, which way it is turned).
- Put flat or solid shapes together to make a new shape and name the shapes used.
