Chemical Measurement, Safety and Models
The opening chemistry unit builds the habits every later course depends on: reading hazard information and planning safe work, using SI units and scientific notation, recording measurements with honest precision and significant figures, calculating density with dimensional analysis, and judging what a chemical model shows and leaves out.
- 5 lessons
- About 110 minutes
- Measurement, safety and models check: 10 questions
- Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, draw a graph, match pairs, type a number and put in order
What learners will discover
- Interpret hazard pictograms and safety data, choose protective equipment and procedures, and sequence a safe response to a spill.
- Use SI base units, metric prefixes and scientific notation to express and convert measurements.
- Record measurements to the precision of the instrument, count significant figures, round calculated results correctly and distinguish accuracy from precision.
- Calculate and apply density using dimensional analysis, and use density to identify a substance.
- Compare chemical models (particle diagrams, ball-and-stick, space-filling, formulas) and explain what each shows and omits.
