Models, Measurement and Uncertainty

Learners discover why careful repeated measurements still differ, and report results honestly as a mean plus or minus an uncertainty. They write very large and very small quantities in scientific notation and convert metric units, test a pendulum model against data by comparing ranges, and use best-fit lines to describe trends and make predictions while recognising the limits of extrapolation.

What learners will discover

  • Use repeated measurements to find a mean and a range, and report a result as mean ± uncertainty (half the range) rounded to a sensible precision.
  • Write very large and very small quantities in scientific notation and convert between metric units using the prefixes kilo, centi, milli and micro.
  • Test a model's prediction against data by comparing ranges, identifying which variables the model says matter (pendulum length matters, bob mass does not).
  • Draw and use a best-fit line to describe a trend, interpret its slope with units, make predictions by interpolation, and explain the risks of extrapolation.
