Queries, Visualization and Communication

Learners answer real questions from Cedar Valley Bike Share's trip data by predicting exactly what SQL-like queries return: filters that combine AND, OR and NOT with parentheses, aggregates with COUNT, SUM, AVG and GROUP BY, and inner joins that silently drop unmatched rows. They then turn a result into communication: choosing a visualization that fits the result's shape and writing a precise headline with annotation, honest axes and caveats.

What learners will discover

  • Predict which rows a query returns when its WHERE clause combines AND, OR and NOT, and use parentheses to make the intended grouping explicit.
  • Predict the results of aggregate queries that use COUNT, SUM and AVG with WHERE and GROUP BY, and explain why an average of group averages can differ from the overall average.
  • Predict the rows of an inner join, including which unmatched rows it leaves out, and assemble a query's clauses in a valid order.
  • Choose a visualization that fits the shape of a query result and communicate the finding honestly with a precise headline, annotation, honest axes and caveats.
