Land Use and Environmental Change
Satellites have recorded Earth's land surface continuously since 1972. Learners separate land cover from land use and distinguish proximate from underlying drivers of change, calculate and interpret the vegetation index NDVI, measure change with a before-and-after change matrix and an accuracy check, and explain the urban heat island and the land-use choices that can reduce it.

What learners will discover
- Distinguish land cover from land use and classify proximate and underlying drivers of land-use change.
- Calculate and interpret the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from red and near-infrared reflectance.
- Quantify land-cover change with a change matrix, annual rates and an accuracy assessment.
- Explain the urban heat island and evaluate land-use responses that reduce urban heat.
