A Physics Investigation with Reviewed Lab Evidence

The physics capstone is a complete investigation of how far a rolling car travels across a surface after leaving a ramp. Learners derive a prediction from energy conservation (distance proportional to release height, with gradient 1/μ), plan a safe fair test, process repeated measurements with uncertainties, find a gradient and intercept with maximum and minimum lines, and evaluate their evidence in a report reviewed by the teacher. A simulation provides practice data; an optional low-risk practical provides real evidence.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 130 minutes
  • Physics investigation check: 10 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, draw a graph, match pairs, type a number, sort into groups and true or false

What learners will discover

  • Plan a physics investigation: derive a testable prediction from a model, identify variables, write a repeatable method and assess risks.
  • Process repeated measurements: means, absolute and percentage uncertainties, and justified treatment of anomalies.
  • Analyse a linear graph: find the gradient and intercept with uncertainty using best-fit and worst-acceptable lines, and interpret them physically.
  • Evaluate an investigation, distinguishing random and systematic errors, and explain what simulated evidence can and cannot establish compared with reviewed laboratory evidence.
