Syllables and Two-Syllable Reading

Step 14 of the PlayOwl sequence turns everything learned so far into a strategy for longer words. Children learn the six syllable types (closed, open, final e, vowel team, r-controlled and consonant-le), split two-syllable words in the right place (rab-bit, ro-bot, cab-in), read y at the end of a longer word as long e (hap-py) and read the decodable story Pickle and the Puddle.

What learners will discover

  • Identify the six syllable types and tell how the vowel sounds in each (closed: short; open: long; final e: long; vowel team; r-controlled; consonant-le).
  • Split two-syllable words between two consonants (rab-bit) or around one consonant (ro-bot, cab-in), trying the open syllable first and flexing if needed.
  • Read words ending in consonant-le (ta-ble, pud-dle) and words where final y says long e (hap-py, ba-by).
  • Read two-syllable words with mixed syllable types in connected text (rain-coat, gar-den, cup-cake).
