In the early grades, reading is about cracking the code. Children connect letters to sounds, blend sounds into words, read common sight words such as the, said and was by heart, and move from decodable sentences to short books. Alongside phonics, they answer questions about stories, learn new words from context, and write sentences with capitals and end marks. In second grade, children decode vowel teams such as ai, ee and oa, read two-syllable words, retell stories and their lessons, and use nouns, verbs and adjectives in writing.
