Climate, Biomes and Resources

Learners discover that climate, above all temperature and precipitation, decides which plants and animals can live in a place, creating Earth's great biomes: tundra, taiga, temperate deciduous forest, grassland, desert, tropical rainforest and the ocean. They read climographs to identify a biome, find biome patterns on the world map, and trace the resources each biome gives people, from maple syrup to copper, along with ways to use them without using them up.

What learners will discover

  • Describe the major biomes (tundra, taiga, temperate deciduous forest, grassland, desert, tropical rainforest and ocean) and the climate that makes each one.
  • Read a climograph or climate table (average temperature and precipitation by month) and use it to identify a biome.
  • Locate examples of biomes on a world map and describe the pattern from the equator toward the poles.
  • Identify resources that come from each biome and explain ways people can conserve them.
